1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS

The 1968 Mustang GT/California Special, often simply called the GT/CS, was a striking, limited-edition package designed to add style, flair, and exclusivity to Ford’s already wildly popular pony car. Created specifically for the California market to capture the attention of the West Coast’s car enthusiasts and hot-rodders, the GT/CS quickly became one of the most iconic and desirable Mustang variants of the era.

Visually, the GT/CS was impossible to miss. It featured unique side scoops with a distinctive “fender vent” design that set it apart from standard Mustangs, along with special “California Special” badging, a blacked-out grille with fog lamps, and a rear spoiler integrated with side taillight extensions that wrapped around the quarters. Dual racing stripes ran over the hood and trunk, complementing the aggressive styling. This package gave the Mustang a sportier, more aggressive presence that appealed to those wanting a standout look without stepping up to the Shelby models.

Under the hood, the GT/CS shared the Mustang’s standard engine options, with many buyers opting for the popular 289 or 302 V8s for a balance of power and drivability. The package itself focused more on appearance and handling upgrades, with a performance-tuned suspension, heavy-duty front springs, and upgraded shocks standard to enhance cornering and ride quality. Many GT/CS cars were also equipped with the GT package, which included front disc brakes, a functional hood scoop, and special badging, further boosting the car’s muscle credentials.

Inside, the California Special featured upgraded trim and unique “California Special” emblems on the interior panels. It retained the sporty bucket seats and simple yet driver-focused dashboard of the standard Mustang, with available options like Rally-Pac instrumentation and the popular Pony Interior trim.

Though produced in relatively limited numbers—just under 4,000 units—the 1968 Mustang GT/California Special became an instant collector’s favorite. It combined the Mustang’s raw performance with a distinct West Coast style that captured the imagination of enthusiasts across the country.

Today, the ’68 GT/CS is celebrated for its bold looks, rarity, and connection to the golden era of Mustang muscle, making it a sought-after classic for collectors and fans of American muscle alike.
