1967 Ford Mustang

The 1967 Ford Mustang marked a bold new chapter for the pony car that had already taken America by storm. This was the first major redesign since the Mustang’s debut in 1964, giving the car a more aggressive, muscular presence while retaining the classic proportions that made it so beloved. The ’67 Mustang wasn’t just an update—it was a clear statement that Ford was ready to compete at the highest levels of performance and style.

Visually, the 1967 model grew in nearly every dimension, with a longer, wider body and a more pronounced grille featuring a prominent corral around the running horse emblem. The quad-headlight front end added a touch of sophistication and menace, while the fastback, coupe, and convertible body styles all showcased sharper character lines and a wider stance. Underneath the hood, the engine lineup expanded significantly. Ford introduced the legendary 390-cubic-inch FE V8, delivering up to 320 horsepower, alongside the now-iconic 289 V8 in several states of tune. The big news, however, was the introduction of the legendary 428 Cobra Jet engine, which made its official debut late in the model year and quickly became a performance icon. With horsepower ratings pushing past 350, the ’67 Mustang was a serious contender in the muscle car wars.

The suspension and chassis were also improved for better handling and ride comfort, with a redesigned front suspension and stronger rear axle. Transmission options included 3- and 4-speed manuals as well as a 3-speed automatic, giving drivers plenty of choices to suit their driving style.

Inside, the 1967 Mustang featured a refreshed dashboard layout with new, more modern instruments, optional woodgrain trim, and redesigned seats that offered better support. The “Pony Interior” package continued, with unique trim and badging, and the car offered new convenience options such as power windows and rear window defoggers. Safety features were also upgraded with improved seat belts and energy-absorbing steering columns.

The 1967 Mustang bridged the gap between the sporty pony car and the muscle car era that was just gaining momentum. It combined style, power, and a sense of occasion in a way that few cars of the time could match. Today, the ’67 Mustang remains one of the most iconic and desirable models in the Mustang lineage—a timeless symbol of American muscle and style.
