1929 Rolls Royce 20/25 "Lady Limousine"

The 1929 Rolls-Royce 20/25 represents the elegance and engineering excellence of the interwar period—an era when motoring was as much about prestige and refinement as it was about transportation. Introduced as a successor to the 20 HP, the 20/25 was aimed at owner-drivers and those seeking a more manageable alternative to the larger Phantom models, without sacrificing the legendary Rolls-Royce quality.

Mechanically, the 20/25 was a significant step forward. Under the hood was a smooth and reliable 3.7-liter inline-six engine, enlarged from the 20 HP’s unit. While it didn’t aim for performance in the modern sense, it delivered smooth, quiet, and effortless power—hallmarks of the Rolls-Royce experience. Coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission and refined suspension, the car offered a surprisingly capable and comfortable ride, even over the rough roads of its day.

Unlike many cars of the era, Rolls-Royce sold the 20/25 as a chassis and drivetrain only—leaving the bodywork to be commissioned from the finest coachbuilders of the time. This means no two 20/25s are exactly alike. Renowned names like Park Ward, Mulliner, Hooper, and Thrupp & Maberly created elegant saloons, tourers, and drophead coupés atop the 20/25 platform, each tailored to the tastes of the buyer.

Visually, the 20/25 exudes prewar luxury. A tall, upright grille crowned by the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy leads the way, while long flowing fenders, exposed running boards, and intricate detailing give each example an air of stately grace. Interiors were often finished in the finest wood, leather, and wool, with appointments more akin to a private railway carriage than a motorcar.

The 20/25 was a commercial success for Rolls-Royce, helping the company weather the economic strains of the Great Depression and expanding its reach into a broader market. It became the best-selling Rolls-Royce model between 1929 and 1936, setting the foundation for future models and solidifying the brand’s reputation for excellence.

Today, the 1929 Rolls-Royce 20/25 is admired not just for its timeless design, but for its place in the evolution of one of the most prestigious automotive marques in the world. It’s a car that represents craftsmanship, dignity, and the golden age of bespoke motoring.
